Impressionists along the Seine

Paris Les Andelys Rouen Normandy Beaches Honfleur Giverny Paris

11 Days from July 9 to July 18, 2010

with Carol Bishop & Pamela Abraham

Begin in Paris, July 9.  3 days and 2 nights in a lovely 3 star hotel located in the heart of Paris near the Champs-Élysées, le Tour Eiffel and the Opéra.  Carol Bishop, PhD, guides us through the ideas, art, sites and artists known as French Impressionism.  Talks, lessons, museums, fine cuisine are just the beginning of our “Impressionist Tour”.

Pamela Abraham and Carol Bishop host Callisto Tours’ private group on board Uniworld’s River Baroness. Cruise the Seine to Normandy and back to Paris immersed in the landscapes familiar to us from the artwork and travels of the Impressionists. A stateroom is home for the week, we unpack once and our ship takes us to new places each day.  Gourmet meals, relaxing accommodations, and each day Carol Bishop talks on art and gives instruction on making your own impressionist images.  Uniworld features a daily excursion and tour.  Time to sketch, ride a bike, take a walk, create an adventure on your own, or read and relax.

And finally, culminate the week with 2 glorious nights in Paris on board the River Baroness.  Take advantage of Uniworld’s Paris city tour, shop, enjoy the city on your own and join Callisto Tours’ final “au revoir Paris”.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Tentative Itinerary as of 9/16/2009, subject to change.

July 8 - Day 1:  Thursday.  Leave your home city and take your flight to Paris.

July 9 - Day 2:  Friday.  On arrival, transfer to our hotel in the center of Paris.  Unpack and freshen up before meeting in the lobby at 3pm.  First a welcome toast and introductions then away we go to the L’Orangerie, the museum of Impressionism masterpieces.  Following, Carol Bishop guides us on a walk through the special secrets of historic Paris concluding with a welcome dinner celebrating the beginning of an unforgettable journey.  (D)

July 10 - Day 3:  Saturday.  A talk on the painters and ideas of Impressionism follows breakfast; then an opportunity to engage the works firsthand on a visit to the Musée D’Orsay.  (Optional self guided visit to see the historical exhibits on WWII as well as the Napoleon exhibit among others in the Musée de l’Armée at Les Invalides.)  Discussions continue over a lunch in a special Parisian bistro.  In the afternoon, Carol Bishop leads us to the Musée Marmottan, a literal shrine to Impressionism followed by a free evening to explore the City of Lights as you wish.  (BB, L)

July 11 - Day 4:  Sunday.  Following breakfast, join a discussion of the locations to be visited in the days ahead and their influence on Impressionism.  There is time to walk in the gardens or take a quick look at Rodin’s influence on Impressionism.  Check out of the hotel and in the afternoon we transfer to the River Baroness and check into our staterooms ready for our departure from Paris.  (BB)

July 12 - DAY 5: Monday.  Les Andelys.  Uniworld’s Featured Excursion: Walk to Château Gaillard.  Les Andelys was of considerable strategic importance during the Middle Ages, prompting King Richard the Lionheart to build a fortified castle to protect the Duchy of Normandy from the French King Philip II in the 12th century. Walk to the English king’s stronghold and admire the remains of the impressive Château Gaillard.  Talks on how and why the Impressionists went to these and other out of the way sites to paint.  (BB, L, Captain’s Welcome Dinner)

July 13 - DAY 6: Tuesday.  Rouen (Normandy Beaches).  Uniworld’s Featured Excursion: Full-day Normandy Beaches and visit to Bayeux Tapestry Museum.  Because of Normandy’s proximity to the sea, it has been the site of many conflicts and battles, including the famous D-Day Invasion by the Allied forces during WWII. Before visiting the beaches of Normandy, you’ll be taken to Bayeux, where you can appreciate the Medieval depiction of the Battle of Hastings on a tapestry dating from the 11th century.  Learn about the compositional strategies the Impressionists borrowed from the Middles Ages.  Afterward, you will visit places that are haunting reminders of the Allies’ hard fight for freedom—the American Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer, the Allied landing sites at Omaha Beach, and Mulberry Harbor at Arromanches. (BB, D)

July 14 - DAY 7: Wednesday.  Rouen.  Uniworld’s Featured Excursion: Walking tour of Rouen.  Our visit to Rouen will take you to the stunning Gothic cathedral, a major motif in the work of Monet.  We will walk the haunting Medieval quarter with its half-timbered, slate-tile roofs; and the Gros Horloge, a Renaissance clock tower that arches overhead. The walk ends at Vieux Marche, where Joan of Arc was punished for her defiance. (BB, L, D)

July 15 - DAY 8: Thursday.  Caudebec (Honfleur).  Uniworld’s Featured Excursion: Visit to Honfleur.  After crossing the majestic Normandy Bridge spanning the river delta, travel overland to Honfleur, a charming French harbor town recreated in numerous paintings by such artists as Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet. You’ll be taken on a guided walking tour from the former smuggler’s harbor of Vieux Bassin—the most frequently painted scene in Honfleur, where the fishing village backdrop is seemingly unchanged from over 500 years ago—through the pedestrian streets to St. Catherine’s Church. (BB, L, D)

July 16 - DAY 9: Friday.  Vernon (Giverny).  Uniworld’s Featured Excursion: Monet’s Giverny.  Visit Monet’s home in his beloved village of Giverny, where he lived for 43 years, until his death in 1926. You’ll explore Monet’s house, furnished as it was when the leader of the Impressionist school lived here, including his precious collection of Japanese engravings. Strolling the gardens, you’ll see the familiar Japanese bridge and water garden shaded by the weeping willows that so inspired this master’s work. Watch the light play on the pond which is covered with the water lilies reproduced in Monet’s numerous enchanting versions of The Nympheas (The Water Lilies). (BB, L, Captain’s Farewell Dinner)

July 17 - DAY 10: Saturday.  Paris.  Uniworld’s featured excursion: Paris city tour.  You’ll begin your city tour with a drive up the grand boulevard Champs-Élysées and past the Arc de Triomphe. You’ll stop for a photo opportunity at the Eiffel Tower before continuing to Place Vendôme, Hôtel de Ville, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Latin Quarter. Then it’s on to Les Invalides, the Louvre courtyard, and the Luxembourg Gardens, where you will see a slice of daily Parisian life—gentleman playing boules and children sailing boats on the glassy pond, the same motifs that inspired the Impressionists—as well as view Bartholdi’s model for the Statue of Liberty. (BB, L, D)

July 18 - DAY 11: Sunday.  Depart Paris.  Disembark the ship and transfer to Charles de Gaulle Airport for your flight home.
